Children’s Safety & Privacy
Last updated: 7 September 2026
Katha Kutty is made for children aged roughly two to ten, and their safety is the constraint we design around rather than a feature we added. This page sets out what that means in practice.
No advertising. Ever.
There is no advertising anywhere in Katha Kutty. No banners, no video ads, no sponsored stories, no advertising SDKs, and no advertising identifiers collected. We have no commercial reason to hold a child’s attention longer than the story they chose — we are paid by their parent, not by an advertiser.
Nothing a child can buy
There are no in-app purchases a child can make. Subscriptions are bought by an adult, and every screen that could cost money sits behind the parent’s control.
Nothing a child can be contacted through
Katha Kutty has no chat, no messaging, no comments a child can see, no user-to-user contact of any kind, and no way for a stranger to reach a child. There are no external links inside the children’s experience.
A child cannot hold an account
Accounts belong to a parent or guardian, verified by mobile number. A child profile is something the parent creates inside that account; it is not a login and it has no password of its own.
What the parent controls
- A PIN guards settings, subscription and account screens. Repeated wrong attempts lock it temporarily.
- Daily listening limits can be set per child, because siblings differ.
- Bedtime mode pins the app to the foreground so a child cannot wander into other apps on the device.
- Listening history is visible to the parent.
- Deletion — a child’s profile, including any name recording, can be removed at any time.
What we know about a child, and why
Only what is needed to make the app work for them: a first name or nickname to greet them, a date of birth to suggest stories of the right age and to wish them happy birthday, an optional avatar, and what they have listened to so a story can resume where it stopped. Nothing about a child is used to profile, target or advertise to them, and nothing about a child is sold or shared with anyone outside the service providers who run the app.
Name recordings
If you ask us to say your child’s name at the end of stories, you may record a few seconds of yourself saying it so our storyteller says it the way your family does. That recording of your voice is deleted as soon as the clip has been made. The finished clip is stored privately, delivered only through links that expire, and can be removed by you at any time.
The stories themselves
Every story, song and reading is produced or reviewed by our own team before it appears. There is no user-generated content in Katha Kutty, so nothing can arrive in front of a child without a person here having chosen it.
Consent, and the law
Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, personal data of a child may only be processed with verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and children may not be tracked or targeted with advertising. Our account model exists to satisfy exactly that: an adult verifies their own mobile number, creates the account, and gives that consent knowingly. We also design to meet Google Play’s Families policy.
Telling us about a problem
If you find anything in Katha Kutty that worries you — a story that is not age appropriate, a technical fault that exposes something it should not, or anything at all involving a child’s safety — tell us and we will treat it as urgent.
